This guide to rehabilitation in England and Wales attempts to help drug users, their families and friends, referring agents and service providers choose a residential rehabilitation service.
Abstract
Most services have a range of written policies, including: confidentiality; complaints procedure; clients' rights; relapse; re-admission; equal opportunities for residents and staff; health, hygiene and safety; and HIV/AIDS and other blood borne diseases. Medical treatment, including detoxification, is usually the health authority's responsibility, paid for through a block contract with the treatment provider or by an extra contractual referral. Each local authority uses its own criteria to decide who they will pay for and what type of care they will fund. Residents may be required to contribute to their stay from any income or savings. Some services are dually registered, as both nursing and care homes. Unregistered houses usually take only people needing comparatively low levels of support and are usually paid for by housing benefit. Residents may be required to contribute from benefits or income. The document contains the drug user's charter of rights and responsibilities. Figures
