REPORT ON THE OUTCOMES OF SMALL-SCALE STUDIES OF THREE MIDWESTERN, COMMUNITY-BASED RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT PROGRAMS FOR DELINQUENT AND DELINQUENCY-PRONE ADOLESCENTS.
Abstract
SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE THREE PROGRAMS ARE ANALYZED AND THE RESEARCH DESIGN FOR EACH IS EXPLAINED. THE PROGRAMS ARE COMPARED ACCORDING TO SUCH FACTORS AS VARIANCES IN TREATMENT TECHNIQUES, DISCHARGE PLANNING, LENGTH OF STAY, RELEVANCE OF BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION TO PROBLEMS FACED AFTER DISCHARGE, QUALITY OF PROGRAM LEADERSHIP, AND VARIATIONS IN CLIENTS' PRESENTING PROBLEMS. THE THREE STUDIES SUGGEST THAT COMMUNITY-BASED INSTITUTIONS FOR CORRECTIONAL TREATMENT MAY NOT NECESSARILY BE MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN ALTERNATIVE FORMS. AFTER DISCUSSING THEIR DRAWBACKS AND ADVANTAGES, THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT COMMUNITY RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT PROGRAMS ARE PREFERABLE TO STATE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
