Directed mainly to elementary and secondary school teachers and administrators, this volume presents background on the concept of resiliency as a crucial factor in child and youth development and presents a curriculum guide describing objectives and activities that can be used in existing courses in elementary and secondary schools.
Abstract
The manual was developed for use in the public schools in New Mexico. Introductory sections note that five general areas foster resiliency: (1) autonomy, (2) cognitive skills, (3) social skills, (4) self-esteem, and (5) moral and spiritual understanding. Guidelines are presented on how to begin to integrate resiliency concepts into the curriculum by developing lessons that integrate resiliency objectives into the subject matter of existing classes, modifying current teaching strategies in content areas, and analyzing and restructuring the school environment. Lesson plans are presented for English, language arts, social studies, science, and mathematics.
