This paper examined a program to treat pedophiles who were mentally retarded, had mental illness, and physical handicaps.

Abstract

The RESPECT (TM) System is a 7-step program using a group setting to modify behavior and thinking patterns of pedophiles who are mentally retarded, have mental illness, and physical handicaps. The System addresses issues of resistance, denial, empathy for the victim, self-esteem, plan development, and plan evaluation by the entire group. The program is one of habilitation. A perpetrator learns a graduated system of choices that empowers him to trust himself in his community. Four cornerstone principles of the RESPECT system are that it is solution focused; relies heavily on rituals; uses accelerated, multisensory learning techniques; and emphasizes self-efficacy. The paper considered the experiences of 14 pedophiles attending a RESPECT (TM) program. Secondary diagnostic descriptions of the participants included: Personality Disorder, Paranoid Personality Disorder, Schizophrenia, Alcohol Dependence, Impulse Control Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and Dysthymic Disorder. The paper observed that "group therapy is a learning experience for both therapist and members...by relying on what goes on in group for [the analyst's] self understanding, [he/she] is best able to help the members."
