This online guide provides assistance for transgender victims of sexual assault.
The guide was prepared by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Office for Victims of Crime to aid heath care providers, law enforcement and emergency medical personnel, sexual assault advocates, therapists, and others in delivering culturally sensitive, respectful care when working with transgender victims and their families. The information in the guide is presented in four sections. About This Guide describes why the guide is necessary and presents a list of common transgender-related terms. Transgender 101 provides basic information on what it means to be transgender, while the section Sexual Assault in the Transgender Community discusses the high rate of sexual assault within the transgender community and the ramifications for the community. The final section, Tips for Those Who Serve Victims, contains provider-specific advice on how best to serve transgender victims of sexual assault.
