PROBLEMS AND POLICIES WHICH PROMOTE RESTITUTION AND COMPENSATION FOR VICTIMS OF CRIME ARE EXPLORED IN THIS VOLUME FROM THE PROCEEDINGS OF A CONFERENCE ON NEW DIRECTIONS FOR CORRECTIONS HELD ON FEBRUARY 23-25, 1977.
Abstract
WITH THE SUPPORT OF LEAA AND THE SPONSORSHIP OF THE UNITED STATES CATHOLIC CONFERENCE, THE PROJECT ON NEW DIRECTIONS FOR CORRECTIONS CONDUCTED ITS CONFERENCE ON RESTITUTION AND THE VICTIMS OF CRIME. PARTICIPANTS IN THE CONFERENCE INCLUDED SCHOLARS, LAW ENFORCEMENT PROFESSIONALS, AND SOCIAL WORK PRACTITIONERS. BECAUSE OF THE INCREASING CRIME RATE AND THE DRASTIC CONSEQUENCES OF CRIME ON THE INDIVIDUAL VICTIM, EXAMINATION OF METHODS TO ALLEVIATE THE SUFFERING OF VICTIMS IS NECESSARY. THE VICTIM IS TOO OFTEN A FORGOTTEN PERSON IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. TOPICS DISCUSSED AT THE CONFERENCE INCLUDED THE IDENTIFICATION OF CRIME VICTIMS AND THE AVAILABILITY OF SERVICES FOR THEM. TYPICAL OF SUCH SERVICES IS THE DALLAS COUNTY RAPE CRISIS CENTER. SHELTERS HAVE ALSO BEEN PROVIDED IN FORT WORTH AND TARRANT COUNTY, TEX., FOR BATTERED WIVES AND THEIR CHILDREN. THE CONCEPT OF MONETARY RESTITUTION IS EXAMINED FROM THE PERSPECTIVES OF A JUDGE, A CORRECTIONS ADMINISTRATOR, AND A PAROLEE. WORKSHOPS AT THE CONFERENCE STRESSED THE NEED FOR LEGISLATIVE CHANGES AND FOR CITIZEN INVOLVEMENT IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. NO REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED. (TWK)
