Abstract
This June 2012 issue of Restoration of Sovereignty and Safety Magazine presents information and updates on laws that address the problem of sexual and domestic violence against Native American women. The document contains six main sections: In the News, NCAI Update on VAWA 2012 Reauthorization, Speaking Out for Safety, On the Hill, International News, and NIWRC Updates. In the News has three articles that discuss the high rate of rape among Native American women, legislation to close the tribal loophole on domestic abuse in Federal law, and the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Event held on tribal land. The NCAI Updates section and the Speaking Out for Safety section present an overview of tribal amendments to the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act, an examination of certain sections of the Reauthorization Act, a discussion on the constitutional soundness of the VAWA Tribal Provisions, clarification of tribal civil jurisdiction, and a statement from senators supporting the Tribal Jurisdiction Provisions. The On the Hill section presents additional statements from senators supporting the VAWA 2012 Reauthorization, and a discussion on why Congress has delayed passage of the bill, while the International News section discusses the visit of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to examine the situation of indigenous peoples in the United States. The final section of the magazine lists the upcoming training and webinar schedule for the National Indigenous Women's Resource Center.
