Recognizing the benefit of bringing together the outstanding programs and practices across the Nation to prevent underage drinking, the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association conducted a nationwide survey (including Canada) to determine efforts that are driven by, or include as a primary contributor, the beverage retail sector; this booklet reviews the survey process and provides information on exemplary programs identified.
Abstract
Approximately 1,000 inquiries were made to Federal, State, and local agencies; the alcohol beverage industry; and private- sector organizations that are pursuing educational, prevention, enforcement, and training efforts to prevent underage drinking. Emphasis was given to retail programs or practices. Comprehensive information was sought on underage drinking; seller/server training; drinking and driving; programs or policies of law enforcement that help to ensure compliance with Alcoholic Beverage Control laws and regulations; programs on fake or falsified IDs; policing retail establishments; assistance programs (financial or otherwise); and conferences, seminars, workshops, and advertising/public relations programs. Just over 175 programs and practices across the United States and Canada were identified. For each exemplary program presented in this booklet, there is a brief description, special features, evaluation, elements related to effectiveness, when established, the legal basis for the program, how the program is distributed, cost and/or funding, and contact persons for further information.
