This report provides descriptive information on retail theft to help store managers and owners better focus prevention efforts.
Abstract
The data were culled from reports submitted by various retail establishments across the country, and are not totally reliable because of the difficulty of estimating the number of successful and unsuccessful theft attempts stores experiences, and because the reported incidents included here are not necessarily representative of the industry as a whole. The statistics in the report pertain to demographics of the data set; apprehensions per company (by type of business); general observations of trends; average cost of stolen merchandise; theft incidents by month, day of week, and time of day; monthly, daily, and hourly activities; profile of apprehended suspects; and legal status of shoplifters. 8 figures and 1 table
