THE COINCIDENCE OF ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOR AND BACKWARDNESS IN SCHOOL SUGGESTS THAT THE FORMER MAY BE DUE TO THE EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES OF THE LATTER.
Abstract
IN 1971 A BRITISH CLASSIFYING APPROVED SCHOOL (JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION) FOUND THAT, DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE AVERAGE IQ OF THE 1,445 BOYS WHO ARRIVED THERE OVER A TWO-YEAR PERIOD WAS 95.8, THE AVERAGE READING RETARDATION WAS 3 YEARS. AND IN A STUDY OF ALL CHILDREN AGED 9 TO 11 ON THE ISLE OF WIGHT (POPULATION 100,000) ONE-THIRD OF THE ANTISOCIAL CHILDREN WERE AT LEAST 28 MONTHS RETARDED IN READING. OF THE CHILDREN WITH AN EDUCATIONAL HANDICAP, ONE IN SIX HAD A PSYCHIATRIC DISORDER WHICH WAS USUALLY ANTISOCIAL IN TYPE. AND WHEREAS ONLY 6 PER CENT OF THE NEUROTIC BOYS HAD SERIOUS RETARDATION IN READING, 45 PER CENT OF ANTISOCIAL BOYS WERE AT LEAST TWO YEARS RETARDED.
