This paper presents an overview of Evan Stark's (2007) book, Coercive Control and its core concepts as presented in this journal issues articles and papers, understanding that further work is needed in translating the realities of a coercive control model in relation to violence against women.
Abstract
This paper reviews how this journal issue on Evan Stark's (2007) book, Coercive Control focuses on what adapting a coercive control model of abuse implies for intervention, and particularly for shelters and the law. The authors have raised issues as to whether coercive control is a distinct behavioral pattern meriting a distinctive response; whether victimization or resistance is overemphasized, the political costs of reframing domestic violence as coercive control; what the analysis implies for shelters; possible unintended consequences for victims of broadening the criminal justice response to include coercive control; the utility of defining partner abuse as a human rights offense; and how to "narrate" coercive control in the most persuasive way.
