EXPERIENCES AND VIEWPOINTS ON THE USE OF MOUNTED UNITS IN 8 MAJOR CITIES ARE REPORTED.
Abstract
ATLANTA, GA., ALBUQUERQUE, N. MEX., NEW ORLEANS, LA., WASHINGTON, D.C., CLEVELAND, OHIO, NEW YORK, N.Y., ST. LOUIS, MO., AND CHARLESTON, S.C., ARE THE CITIES WHOSE MOUNTED UNITS ARE REVIEWED. MOUNTED PATROLS HAVE BEEN EFFECTIVE IN SHOPPING CENTERS TO REDUCE AUTO BURGLARY, IN PARKS TO REDUCE CRIMES PREVALENT THERE, IN DEMONSTRATIONS TO FACILITATE VISIBILITY AND FLEXIBILITY OF MOVEMENT, AND IN NEIGHBORHOODS TO INCREASE POLICE VISIBILITY AND TO IMPROVE CONTACT WITH THE CITIZENRY. SIGNIFICANT REDUCTIONS IN CRIME RATES ARE NOTED IN MANY OF THE JURISDICTIONS WHERE MOUNTED PATROLS WERE INTRODUCED. SOME OF THE DISADVANTAGES INCLUDE HIGH INITIAL INVESTMENT, LOW COST EFFECTIVENESS, AND RESTRICTED USE. (RCB)
