Abstract
The reviewer, a district attorney, notes that this volume brings together both the legal and the scientific aspects of drunk driving cases. The book's authors are an attorney specializing in drunk driving and an expert in the scientific and medical methods for the determination of blood alcohol concentration. The volume begins with a discussion of the scope of the problem and the effects of alcohol on sensory and divided attention functions. Other sections focus on detecting and stopping the drunk driver, prearrest screening through field sobriety tests and roadside breath screening, arrest and booking procedures, blood alcohol concentration, chemical testing, problems involving the injured drunk driver, and driving under the influence of drugs. Other sections cover pretrial considerations for the prosecution, the trial, and police civil liability in drunk driving enforcement. 4 references
