Abstract
THIS DOCUMENT PRESENTS AN ANALYTICAL AND SYNTHETIC REVIEW OF SELECTED RESEARCH ON THE IMPACT ON CRIME OF POLICE PATROL ACTIVITY. THE PROJECTS INCLUDED IN THIS REVIEW ARE: SOME EFFECTS OF AN INCREASE IN POLICE MANPOWER IN THE TWENTIETH PRECINCT OF NEW YORK CITY; AN EXAMINATION OF THE IMPACT OF INTENSIVE POLICE PATROL ACTIVITIES IN WASHINGTON, D.C.; THE INDIANAPOLIS FLEET PLAN; THE IMPACT OF POLICE ACTIVITY ON CRIME - ROBBERIES ON THE NEW YORK CITY SUBWAY SYSTEM; TECHNICAL EVALUATION OF ST. LOUIS FOOT PATROL; AND THE KANSAS CITY PROACTIVE-REACTIVE DEPLOYMENT EXPERIMENT. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT IN GENERAL THE STUDIES HAVE PRODUCED FINDINGS WHICH ARE OF QUESTIONABLE VALIDITY. THE AUTHOR STATES THAT WHILE A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ACTIONS OF THE POLICE FORCE AND THE LEVELS OF CRIME IN THEIR JURISDICTIONS DOES EXIST, THE EXACT NATURE OF THIS RELATIONSHIP IS STILL UNCLEAR.
