RESULTS OF A FOLLOWUP STUDY OF THE CRIMINAL HISTORIES OF BOYS DETAINED AT THE RHODE ISLAND TRAINING SCHOOL FOR BOYS DURING 1972 ARE PRESENTED; RECIDIVISM RATES ARE DETERMINED.
Abstract
THIS REPORT CONSIDERS NOT ONLY RECIDIVISM RATES WITH REGARD TO BOYS RETURNING TO THE TRAINING SCHOOL, BUT ALSO THEIR OFFENSES COMMITTED AS YOUNG ADULTS. THE FOLLOWUP PERIOD FOR THIS STUDY BEGINS WITH THE 342 BOYS' RELEASE DATES AND EXTENDS TO MAY 15, 1977. VARIABLES CONSIDERED IN THE STUDY ARE RECIDIVISM, TOTAL NUMBER OF DETENTIONS AT THE TRAINING SCHOOL, LENGTH OF DETENTION, AGE OF FIRST DETENTION, AGE OF RELEASE, BIRTH YEAR, TYPE OF OFFENSES RESULTING IN COMMITMENTS TO THE TRAINING SCHOOL, AND TYPE OF OFFENSES RESULTING IN COMMITMENT AFTER RELEASE. OF THE ENTIRE COHORT OF 342, A TOTAL OF 138 OR 40.4 PERCENT RETURNED TO THE SCHOOL SUBSEQUENT TO RELEASE FROM A 1972 DETENTION. AS OF MAY 1977, 109 OF THESE BOYS HAD ALREADY BEEN SENTENCED TO THE ADULT CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION. OF THESE BOYS, ONLY 22 HAD ONE TRAINING SCHOOL DETENTION, 30 HAD TWO DETENTIONS, AND THE REMAINING 57 HAD SERVED THREE OR MORE DETENTIONS. THE RESULTANT COMBINED RATE OF RECIDIVISM IS 77.2 PERCENT. EXTENSIVE TABULAR STATISTICAL DATA IS INCLUDED. (LWM)
