Abstract
IN SECTION ONE OF THIS COMPILATION, SOME OF THE BROAD, PHILOSOPHIC QUESTIONS OF PRIVACY ARE EXPLORED. SECTION TWO DISCUSSES FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CONCERN OR INDIFFERENCE. TOPICS COVERED RANGE FROM APPLICATIONS OF NEW TECHNOLOGY TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCEDURES THROUGH GOVERNMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND THE SCOPE OF ELECTRONIC SURVEILLANCE, TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY AGENCY. THE RECENT ALLEGATIONS OF INVASION OF PRIVACY BY THE FBI AND THE CIA ARE DEALT WITH IN SECTION THREE. SURVEYED IN SECTION FOUR ARE PROBLEMS ARISING FROM INFRINGEMENT OF CITIZEN'S RIGHTS BY COMPUTERIZED BANKING SYSTEMS, TWO-WAY CABLE TV, THE SPREAD OF MEDICAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS, AND THE RELEASE OF STUDENT RECORDS. THE SECTION ENDS WITH A CONSIDERATION OF THE RIGHT TO PRIVACY VERSUS THE RIGHTS OF A FREE PRESS. IN SECTION FIVE, AN EXAMINATION OF THE LANDMARK PRIVACY ACT OF 1974 IS FOLLOWED BY REPORTS ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE ACT AND ARTICLES LOOKING TOWARD FUTURE EFFORTS TO INSURE GREATER PRIVACY.
