Abstract
A review of the police right of collective bargaining covers such issues as the general structure of relevant laws, eligibility for inclusion in a bargaining unit of police officers, the subject over which an employer has a duty to bargain, the right to strike, and the right not to join a labor organization. A discussion of disciplinary standards applicable to police officers includes a summary of disciplinary cases involving police officers. A chapter also covers procedural rights in the disciplinary process. Chapters address the application of the Bill of Rights to police officers, namely, the right of privacy, freedom of speech rights, rights to engage in political activities, and freedom-of-association rights. Other police officer rights discussed pertain to employment discrimination, the right to bring civil lawsuits, and the right to a safe working environment. A law enforcement officer's bill of rights is discussed along with the application of the Fair Labor Standards Act to police officers.
