This guide reviews the rights of inmates under current law and suggests how these rights can be protected.
Abstract
The introduction briefly reviews the history of prisons and the case law pertinent to inmate rights. The booklet presents information in a question-and-answer format. Each of twelve chapters answers questions on specific inmate rights. These pertain to freedom from cruel and unusual punishment, due process, free communication and access to the courts, political rights, religious rights and discrimination, racial discrimination, and privacy and personal appearance. Other topics address the rights of female inmates, medical care and rehabilitation, pretrial confinement (jail conditions and practices), and parole. The concluding chapter explains remedies and procedures for challenging confinement conditions. Appended list of prisoners' rights organizations, 6-item selected bibliography, chapter notes.
