This document includes the statistical results and summary analysis of the Corrections Compendium facility violence survey for 2000 to 2001.
Abstract
In this article, Corrections Compendium presents the results of its periodic survey of violence patterns among prisons in the United States and Canada. The survey was last administered in 1996 and 1997. Data were collected from 40 U.S. corrections systems and 3 Canadian systems. Data collected included information regarding riots and disturbances, inmate suicides, and escapes and walkaways. Standard definitions of each category are provided and systems which use definitions other than the standard are noted. The 2000/2001 survey includes a new question regarding gang-related disturbances. Riots significantly increased for 2001 as compared to 2000, but reported suicide attempts reduced dramatically. Overall, the data indicates that violent incidents were down for the 2000/2001 survey as compared to the 1996/1997 survey. 5 tables
