This Issue of the Virginia Child Protection Newsletter discusses the risk of maltreatment for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Abstract
Topics addressed in the first article are the maltreatment of children with ASD and other disabilities; characteristics of the maltreatment of children with disabilities; how child functioning may relate to physical assault; the risk of re-abuse; the percentage of maltreated children that have disabilities; maltreatment risks for parents/caretakers; and treatment risks from other children. Other sections of this article address maltreatment risks for teachers and residential staff and the investigation and prosecution of cases that involve the maltreatment of children with disabilities. This is followed by discussions of intervention; prevention; and efforts to educate the general public, target parents/caregivers and service providers, and educate children. Separate articles provide basic information on Autism and Asperger's Disorder; safety training for children with ASD; bullying and children with ASD; and respite care for families with disabled children. Resource listings are provided.
