The National Corrective Training Institute, Inc. (NCTI), has developed a full range of programs for mainstreaming at-risk youth. These youth fulfill at least some of the 22 criteria used to determine who is at risk, including low or failing grades, lack of social integration, a poor socioeconomic level, a dysfunctional family, drug or alcohol use, sexual activity, and lack of learning skills.
Abstract
Among the elements that must be found in a successful behavior modification program: that students must be actively involved in the learning process, that they must want to learn and acquire new skills, that there must be an understanding of values and beliefs as well as attention paid to students' self-esteem, and that the programs must teach skills as well as information. The NCTI programs emphasize that individuals differ in terms of temperment, personality, and learning style; this approach is exemplified by the NCTI True Colors system, which allows facilitators to present concepts to students in their own learning style, gives students a key to understanding interactions with their parents and teachers, and enhances self-esteem and communication. The material is presented according to the NCTI curriculum model and can be taught at an individual level or in progressively expanding courses.
