This manual for trainees in the Riverside Sheriff's Department's (California) field training program presents performance objectives for each functional area encompassed in the 16-week training period and includes an outline of the trainee's evaluation report.
Abstract
For each of the components of the functional areas, the manual provides the learning goal, performance objectives, and success criteria. Functional areas include professional orientation, police-community relations, law, laws of evidence, communications, vehicle operations, force and weaponry, patrol procedures, and traffic. Remaining functional areas are criminal investigation, custody, physical fitness and defense techniques, civil matters, facility orientation, intake/release, inmate movement, housing unit, inmate rights, and the management of hostage situations. The weekly evaluation report provides for the rating of a trainee's appearance, attitude, knowledge, performance, relationships, and specific trainee strengths and weaknesses. Standardized evaluation guidelines define the three rating levels for each of 34 performance areas. The phase guide specifies the learning goals to be achieved in each of the four phases of the 16-week training period. The appendix contains a field training assignment log and an investigation/activity record.
