EVALUATION OF A GRANT TO FUND THE PUBLIC DEFENDER OFFICE IN THE CITY OF ROANOKE, VIRGINIA.
Abstract
THE PROJECT THAT WAS FUNDED PROVIDES AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE COURT APPOINTED OR ASSIGNED CASE SYSTEM, THE COST OF WHICH HAS DRAMATICALLY RISEN FOLLOWING THE U.S. SUPREME COURT'S DECISIONS WHICH MANDATED INDIGENT LEGAL ASSISTANCE IN FELONY AND MISDEMEANOR CRIMINAL PROSECUTIONS. THE ROANOKE PUBLIC DEFENDER OFFICE REPRESENTS A DIRECT COST SAVING OF AS MUCH AS $75,000, AND INCLUDES OTHER BENEFITS, SUCH AS USING RECENT LAW SCHOOL GRADUATES. THE EVALUATOR RECOMMENDS THAT THE PROJECT BE REFUNDED AND THAT ATTENTION BE GIVEN TO ANALYZING FUTURE PERSONNEL NEEDS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT) ...KAP
