REVIEW OF CHANGES IN THE ROLE AND FUNCTION OF CRIMINOLOGY IN RECENT DECADES, EXAMINING CRIMINOLOGICAL TRENDS IN WEST GERMANY AND THE UNITED STATES AS WELL AS EUROPE AND THE REST OF THE WORLD GENERALLY.
Abstract
THE NOTION OF CRIME AS AN UBIQUITOUS PHENOMENON SUBJECT TO MANIPULATION HAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE IMPORTANCE OF THE CONCEPT OF SOCIAL CONTROL IN CRIMINOLOGY. STUDIES ON THE DEFINITION OF CRIME, PATTERNS OF JUSTICE AND LAW ENFORCEMENT, EFFICIENCY OF CRIME POLICY, UNREPORTED CRIME, AND VICTIMOLOGY ARE EMPHASIZED AT THE EXPENSE OF STUDIES ON OFFENDER PERSONALITIES AND COMPARISONS BETWEEN OFFENDERS AND NON-OFFENDERS. THE NEW CRIMINOLOGY IS ESPECIALLY CONCERNED WITH THE CONCEPTS OF SOCIAL CLASS AND POWER. THE POINT OF VIEW OF CRIMINOLOGICAL RESEARCH HAS BECOME MORE SOCIALLY CRITICAL AND LESS SCIENTIFICALLY NEUTRAL. THIS HAS RESULTED IN AN IDEOLOGICAL POLARIZATION IN RESEARCH TRENDS BETWEEN RIVAL POINTS OF VIEW. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED) --IN GERMAN. SUMMARIES IN ENGLISH, FRENCH, AND GERMAN 1975 (SEE) NCJ-37174
