Abstract
A REVIEW OF WHAT VOLUNTEERS HAVE BEEN DOING IN THE NETHERLANDS, JAPAN, SCANDANAVIA, AND THE UNITED STATES REVEALS THAT THEY CAN PROVIDE HELP IN AREAS SUCH AS VISITS WITH THE OFFENDER AND HIS FAMILY, COUNSELING, AN SUPPORT OF PROBATION AND AFTER-CARE PROGRAMS. THE SHOW OF CONCERN ON THE PART OF THE VOLUNTEER BY ITSELF HAS A VERY BENEFICIAL EFFECT ON THE OFFENDER.
