Field training managers are generally responsible for assigning trainees to their field training officers (FTOs) and shifts, tracking the progress of each trainee through the program, evaluating the performance of FTOs, periodically assessing the entire program, and managing trainees on a case- by-case basis.
Abstract
To achieve these goals, the field training manager must establish a liaison with, and gain the support of, the patrol supervisor and have the authority to assign trainees to specific FTOs. The effective management of trainees and FTO assignments requires close monitoring of scheduling conflicts and individual FTOs' teaching style and skills. To keep the field training program current, the manager must constantly evaluate the program and the FTOs' performance; trainees' feedback is an integral part of this process. The manager should have the authority to extend training for trainees who are responding to remedial efforts or to exercise an early- out option for trainees who have had prior experience. Other areas of importance to field training managers are terminations and academy liaison.
