Juvenile justice personnel can play an important role in local crime prevention programs by diverting as many juveniles as possible from the formal justice system and by developing alternative measures, particularly social measures in the areas of education, housing, health, and employment, for preventing juvenile delinquency.
Abstract
During the 1980's juvenile justice personnel have developed a more consistent approach that has led to the diversion of many youthful offenders from the criminal justice system. The use of a systems approach in local areas has been central to this success. Crucial tasks for juvenile justice personnel in juvenile delinquency prevention are interagency coordination, the use of joint information, support and training for other professionals, work with community members, and monitoring and evaluation. In addition, policies are needed to help youth to develop and mature constructively.
