The text reviews the role of police in crime prevention, particularly regarding the Slovene regulations on preventive police patrol and accounts for theoretical as well as practical findings.
Abstract
However, it is suggested that it is not possible to enforce these regulations due to a poor knowledge of the etiology of crime and the effects of mechanical prevention or purpose of police patrol. The effect of patrol depends on the potential and reliability of predicting dangerous crime. This is possible in police work only by carrying out research on crime and by the transfer of this knowledge to police training and work. The basis of police work is professional knowledge that is supported by contemporary technology and organization of work. The deterrent role of the police has been losing significance, replaced by a more preventive role that is dependent, in large part, upon improvement in police-community relations. 68 references
