OPERATIONS OF THE LONDON PROBATION SERVICE (ENGLAND) ARE DESCRIBED.
Abstract
THE LONDON PROBATION SERVICE AIMS AT BEING THE COMMUNITY-BASED TREATMENT ORGANIZATION FOR OFFENDERS, OFFERING A MULTITUDE OF RESOURCES FOR A VARIETY OF TREATMENT SERVICES. EXAMPLES OF SERVICES PROVIDED THROUGH THE PROBATION SERVICE ARE CASEWORK, ACCOMMODATIONS (HOSTELS-LODGINGS), WORK DIRECTED TOWARD GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE RETRIBUTION PAYMENTS, DAY CENTERS, LEISURE ACTIVITIES, AND FINANCIAL HELP TO MEET ESSENTIAL NEEDS SHORT OF LONG-TERM MAINTENANCE. IN ENGLAND AND WALES, THE PROBATION SERVICE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SUPERVISION OF OFFENDERS UNDER A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT CATEGORIES OF ORDERS, INCLUDING PROBATION ORDERS (6 MONTHS TO 3 YEARS), PAROLE, AND AFTERCARE. THE PROBATION OFFICER ACTS AS A COORDINATOR OF SERVICES. FOLLOWING A DIAGNOSIS OF THE CLIENT'S NEED, THE OFFICER COORDINATES THE SERVICES DEEMED CAPABLE OF MEETING SUCH NEEDS. A CHART IS PROVIDED TO SHOW THE SERVICE FUNCTIONS OF THE INNER LONDON PROBATION AND AFTER-CARE SERVICE.
