This article examines stress among Indian police officers and attempts to find causes.
Abstract
Police stress, a well researched subject in other countries, remains relatively neglected in India. A study was conducted among 30 serving police officers to explore stress in this group by using Pareek's ORS scale. The total mean score obtained was relatively higher than some other occupational groups. Of the 10 dimensions, the highest scores were reported by the officers on Role Erosion, Self Role Distance, Inter Role Distance, and Role Stagnation (in that order). Possible causes for role stress were outlined after analysis of the study results. It must be noted, however, that the sample was very small and the results must be substantiated by further studies.
