AFTER EXAMINING LEGAL AND JUDICIAL PROBLEMS IN RAPE VICTIMIZATIONS, THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES VICTIM TRAITS AND ACTIONS WHICH MAY BE RELEVANT IN THE STUDY OF SEX OFFENSE VICTIMIZATIONS.
Abstract
THE PROBLEMS IN OBTAINING ACCURATE INFORMATION ON SEX OFFENSE VICTIMIZATIONS ARE REVIEWED. THESE INCLUDE THE LOW REPORTING RATE FOR SEX OFFENSES, THE LOW DETECTION RATE OF SEX OFFENDERS, AND INCOMPLETE RECORDING OF INFORMATION ON SEX OFFENSES. VICTIM CHARACTERISTICS AND THE RELATION OF THESE CHARACTERISTICS TO THE COMMISSION OF A SEX OFFENSE ARE THEN EXAMINED. THESE CHARACTERISTICS INCLUDE RACE, AGE, DEMOGRAPHIC TRAITS, EDUCATIONAL AND OCCUPATIONAL BACKGROUND, AND CRIMINAL RECORD OF THE VICTIM. ALSO DISCUSSED ARE SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL PATTERNS IN RAPE CASES, THE ROLE OF VICTIM-OFFENDER RELATIONSHIPS, VICTIM PRECIPITATION OF SEX OFFENSES, AND VICTIM BEHAVIOR DURING THE OFFENSE. FINALLY, THE CLASSIFICATION OF SEX OFFENSE VICTIMS ACCORDING TO THEIR ROLE IN THE CRIME IS DISCUSSED. THE MAIN CLASSIFICATION CATEGORIES ARE THE COERCED VICTIM, THE PASSIVE-ACCIDENTAL VICTIM, AND THE PARTICIPANT VICTIM.
