COMPLETE RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR THE ANNUAL CANINE CERTIFICATION TRIALS OF THE UNITED STATES POLICE CANINE ASSOCIATION (U.S.P.C.A.) FOR POLICE DOG 1 (P.D.1) ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE TRIALS ARE DIVIDED INTO FOUR SECTIONS INCLUDING OBEDIENCE, AGILITY, SEARCHING, AND ATTACK AND RECALL; A SCORE OF 350 POINTS OR BETTER IN ANY SANCTIONED REGIONAL TRIAL EARN A P. D. 1 RATING, WITH STARS TO INDICATE SCORING ACHIEVEMENTS; A QUALIFYING SCORE IS 450 OUT OF A POSSIBLE 600 POINTS. THE ENTRY OF DOGS FROM EACH DEPARTMENT IS UNLIMITED, HOWEVER, EACH DEPARTMENT MAY ENTER ONLY ONE TEAM, CONSISTING OF FOUR DOGS, INTO EACH TRIAL. ALL JUDGES FOR BOTH REGIONAL AND NATIONAL TRIALS MUST BE ACTIVE MEMBERS OF THE U.S.P.C.A.; FIELD STEWARDS AND TEST STEWARDS DIRECT THE EXERCISES. FIRST, THE OBEDIENCE TEST CONSISTS OF VERBAL COMMANDS FROM THE HANDLER, (I.E., SIT, COME, HEEL), AND WILL BE PERFORMED OFF LEASH. SECOND, THE AGILITY TEST INCLUDES HURDLES, A 6-FOOT SCALING WALL, A BROAD JUMP, AND A CATWALK. THIRD, THE SEARCH TEST WITH A 3 MINUTE TIME LIMIT INVOLVES THE FINDING AND RETRIEVING OF SELECTED ARTICLES SUCH AS A KEY, A SHOTGUN SHELL, OR METAL GUN FROM A DEFINED AREA. THE SECOND PHASE OF THE SEARCH TEST INVOLVES LOCATING A SUSPECT WHO IS HIDING IN ONE OF FIVE BOXES; K-9'S ARE JUDGED ON THE WAY THEY WORK AND INDICATE, AND PENALTIES ARE ASSESSED FOR LACK OF INTEREST OR LEAVING THE SEARCH AREA. FOURTH, THE ATTACK AND RECALL TEST DEMONSTRATE THE CONTROL OF THE DOG UNDER VARIED CIRCUMSTANCES INCLUDING ATTACK UNDER GUNFIRE. THE FIVE PARTS OF THIS FINAL EXERCISE INCLUDE RECALL, FALSE START, ATTACK WITHOUT GUNFIRE, HANDLER PROTECTION, AND ATTACK WITH GUNFIRE. SAMPLE SCORING SHEETS USED BY JUDGES WITH MAXIMUM POINT DESIGNATIONS ARE INCLUDED. (LWM)
