Abstract
MAKING RUNNING A HABIT IS SAID TO BE THE BEST MOTIVATOR. OTHER MOTIVATORS INCLUDE FINDING PEOPLE TO RUN WITH, KEEPING FITNESS CHARTS, OR TAKING PART IN THE PRESIDENTIAL SPORTS AWARD PROGRAM. IT IS POINTED OUT THAT RUNNING IS A POSITIVE FORM OF ADDICTION. GUIDELINES FOR CHOOSING RUNNING SHOES AND OTHER EQUIPMENT ARE PRESENTED. THE CONSEQUENCES OF FAILING TO DO WARMUP EXERCISES PRIOR TO RUNNING ARE NOTED. SEVERAL BASIC WARMUP AND STRETCHING EXERCISES ARE ILLUSTRATED AND DESCRIBED IN DETAIL. GUIDELINES FOR BEGINNING RUNNERS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR REDUCING THE DISCOMFORT AND POSSIBLE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH WINTER AND SUMMER OUTDOOR EXERCISES ARE PRESENTED. SEE ALSO NCJ-47054 (PART ONE). (LKM)
