PRESENTED AS AN EXAMPLE OF YOUTH-OPERATED, COUNTERCULTURE SERVICE PROJECTS, THIS DOCUMENT DESCRIBES THE PHILOSOPHY, OPERATIONS, PROGRAMS, AND STAFF OF TWO SUCH PROJECTS: A RUNAWAY HOUSE AND GROUP FOSTER HOMES.
Abstract
BOTH THE RUNAWAY HOUSE AND GROUP HOMES ARE OPERATED BY THE SPECIAL APPROACHES IN JUVENILE ASSISTANCE (SAJA), A NONPROFIT CORPORATION DEDICATED TO DEVELOPIING NEW APPROACHES TO THE PROBLEMS ADOLESCENTS MAY FACE AND PROVIDING FREE OR LOW COST SERVICES TO ADOLESCENTS AND THEIR PARENTS IN THE WASHINGTON METROPOLITAN AREA. THE STRUCTURE AND PROGRAMS OF SAJA ARE FIRST DESCRIBED. THE RUNAWAY HOUSE IS A TEMPORARY SHELTER AND COUNSELING PROGRAM FOR YOUNG PEOPLE UNDER THE AGE OF 18 WHO HAVE RUN AWAY FROM HOME, REFORM SCHOOL, MENTAL HOSPITALS, ETC. THE DEVELOPMENT, CLIENTS, CONFERENCES, GROUP SESSIONS, CONSULTANTS, STAFF, AND COMMUNITY CONTACTS OF THE PROGRAM ARE OUTLINED. THE GROUP FOSTER HOMES OPERATED BY SAJA WERE ESTABLISHED IN ORDER TO PROVIDE A FULL-TIME RESIDENCE FOR JUVENILES AND RUNAWAYS WHO HAD NO PLACE ELSE TO LIVE. SUCH ASPECTS OF THE GROUP HOMES AS THEIR ESTABLISHEMNT, SELECTION CRITERIA, RELATIONS WITH PUBLIC AGENCIES, OPERATIONS, HOUSE RULES, AND STAFF ARE OUTLINED. A DISCUSSION OF SAJA'S POLICY ON FUNDING IS ALSO PROVIDED.
