THE AUTHOR EMPLOYS ANALYSIS OF DATA FROM INSTITUTION RECORDS AND INTERVIEWS WITH INMATES AT THIS OHIO YOUTH COMMISSION MAXIMUM SECURITY INSTITUTION TO IDENTIFY CHARACTERISTICS WHICH DISTINGUISH RUNAWAYS.
Abstract
JESNESS INVENTORY TEST RESULTS INDICATE THAT PERSONALITY TRAITS ARE NOT SIGNIFICANTLY RELATED TO LIKELIHOOD OF ESCAPE OR ATTEMPTING TO ESCAPE. ELEVEN VARIABLES - SUCH AS RACE, DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE, PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION, AND FREQUENCY OF HOME VISITS - WERE FOUND TO BE SIGNIFICANTLY RELATED. A PROFILE IS PRESENTED OF THE 'TYPICAL' RUNAWAY. THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS THAT A BOY BECOMES A RUNAWAY WHEN HE IS FACED WITH AN UNMANAGEABLE PROBLEM WHICH HE FEELS IS UNSHAREABLE. --SUMMARY IN FRENCH
