DO-IT-YOURSELF KIT FOR FIELD INVESTIGATION OF SECURITY MEASURES AND SAFEGUARDS, PROVIDING QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE ASSESSMENTS OF VULNERABILITY.
Abstract
THE BOOKLET IS DESIGNED TO AID IN (1) ASSESSING RISKS, (2) ESTABLISHING PRIORITY PROGRAMS TO MINIMIZE THE PROBABILITY THAT SECURITY PROBLEMS WILL ARISE, AND (3) COUNTERACTING ANY ADVERSE EFFECTS OF PROBLEMS THAT MAY BE UNAVOIDABLE. THE DOCUMENT IS COMPOSED OF CHECKLISTS WHICH CALL FOR QUANTITATIVE RATINGS OF AN ORGANIZATION'S SECURITY EFFECTIVENESS ON EACH OF SEVERAL HUNDRED ITEMS FOR EACH OF EIGHT CLASSIFICATIONS. AREAS OF CONCERN COVERED INCLUDE PERSONNEL, PHYSICAL FACILITY CONDITIONS, DATA HANDLING AND PROGRAMMING TECHNIQUES, OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES, BACK-UP CAPABILITIES, DEVELOPMENT SCHEMES, INSURANCE, AND SECURITY PROGRAM PLANNING. ALTHOUGH SAFE COVERS ELECTRONIC DATA PROCESSING AT ALL LEVELS OF COMPLEXITY, THE TERMINOLOGY USED ASSUMES ONLY LIMITED EXPERIENCE WITH SECURITY AND A MODEST EXPERIENCE WITH ROUTINE DATA PROCESSING. SINCE SAFE WAS DESIGNED FOR ADAPTABILITY AND APPLICABILITY TO ALL TYPES OF ELECTRONIC DATA PROCESSING INSTALLATIONS, INDIVIDUALS MANAGING OPERATIONS OF ALL SIZES, BOTH OLD AND NEW, WILL FIND THIS WORK USEFUL.
