A REVIEW AND ASSESSMENT OF THE ACTIVITIES OF THIS PROGRAM DESIGNED TO REDUCE VIOLENT GANG ACTIVITY BY PROVIDING JOB OPPORTUNTIES, REMEDIAL EDUCATION, JOB REFERRALS, AND COUNSELING ON ATTITUDES AND BEHAVIORS TO GANG MEMBERS.
Abstract
A PROJECT SUMMARY AND REVIEW OF THE CURRENT STATUS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE FIRST PROVIDED. A SUMMARY CHART OF POLICE AND COMMUNITY ASSESSMENTS OF YOUTH SERVED BY SAFE STREETS, INC., WHICH WAS PRODUCED DURING AN EVALUATION OF THIS PROJECT IS INCLUDED. THE CHART SHOWS THAT NO INCREASE IN GANG VIOLENCE WAS SEEN BY POLICE OR THE COMMUNITY IN THOSE GANGS SERVED BY SAFE STREETS. OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT ARE OUTLINED. THEY ARE: TO REDUCE JUVENILE GANG VIOLENCE, TO DISCOURAGE MOTIVATION FOR CIVIL DISORDER AND RIOTS, AND TO DISCOURAGE GANG PARTICIPATION IN CIVIL DISORDER AND RIOTS. SAFE STREETS MAINTAINS TWO CENTERS FOR THE USE OF YOUTH IN TWO DESIGNATED TARGET AREAS OF PHILADELPHIA. THE ACTIVITIES PROVIDED BY THE PROJECT INCLUDE TRIPS TO RURAL AREAS, ENCOURAGING GANG MEMBERS TO PARTICIAPTE IN THE TWO COMMUNITY CENTERS PROVIDED FOR THEIR USE, JOB COUNSELING AND REFERRAL, A TUTORIAL PROGRAM, AND PROVIDING GROUP ENCOUNTER THERAPY SESSIONS. THE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE, POLICY, AND PERSONNEL ARE ALSO DESCRIBED.
