LEAA IS GIVING STATE AND LOCAL COMMUNITIES THE RESOURCES TO IMPROVE ALL FACETS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT.
Abstract
WITH THE HELP OF A BLOCK PLANNING GRANT, EACH STATE ANNUALLY DRAWS UP A COMPREHENSIVE LAW ENFORCEMENT PLAN. ONCE APPROVED THE STATE RECEIVES ITS BLOCK ACTION GRANT TO IMPLEMENT THE PLAN. LEAA AWARDS ACTION GRANTS TO STATES, CITIES, COUNTIES, AND OTHER RECIPIENTS FOR PROJECTS WITH NATIONAL IMPLICATIONS, SPECIAL PROBLEMS, CONSTRUCTION, LAW ENFORCEMENT EDUCATION AND RESEARCH. NEW LEGISLATIVE AMENDMENTS IMPROVE LEAA OPERATIONS AND INCREASE EFFECTIVENESS. BLOCK GRANT FUNDS AND DISCRETIONARY GRANTS HAVE BEEN AWARDED FOR STRENGTHENING POLICE CAPABILITIES; FOR MODERNIZING COURTS AND COURT MANAGEMENT, FOR UPGRADING AND REFORMING CORRECTIONS, TO COMBAT AND CONTROL ORGANIZED CRIME, FOR PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF CIVIL DISORDERS, FOR COMBATTING DRUG ABUSE, FOR REDUCING JUVENILE DELINQUENCY, AND FOR AID TO CITIES IN SPECIAL PROBLEM AREAS SUCH AS VIOLENT STREET CRIMES. HOW AND WHERE TO APPLY FOR THE VARIOUS GRANTS IS GIVEN, AS WELL AS A LISTING OF THE STATE LAW ENFORCEMENT PLANNING AGENCIES AND REGIONAL OFFICES.
