Interviews with residents of 31 municipalities in the Netherlands with populations of more than 50,000 formed the basis of comparisons of petty crime, fear of crime, the extent of a variety of community problems, citizen crime precautions, and public attitudes toward the police.
Abstract
Results revealed that a small number of cities, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht, had the highest risk of attempted residential burglary. Fear of crime was not clearly linked to the size of the municipality. However, the extend of community problems such as property crimes, traffic problems, treat, or degradation was more strongly related to the size of a municipality. The largest cities varied with respect to preventive measures taken by residents. Citizen crime reporting was low in the municipalities. Figures, photographs, table, and list of publications
