This booklet uses hypothetical situations to teach children ages 3 to 11 to recognize dangerous or suspicious situations and prevent abduction.
Abstract
An adult's page provides statistics on missing children -- runaways, abductions, and parental kidnappings. It summarizes the booklet's objectives and emphasizes that its suggestions should be read and used at frequent intervals. Read aloud stories then describe several abduction situations: a man or an attractive woman tries to entice a child into a car by offering candy; a girl who lives with her mother because her parents are separated meets her father in a store where he tries to kidnap her; and a man in a truck meets a child after school and tells her that her mother is sick and sent him to get her. The booklet not only describes these dangerous situations in simple language, but discusses responses that get the child out of danger fast. It also suggests adults that children can go to for help. Following these stories, the booklet addresses teaching methods with an emphasis on roleplaying, abduction proofing your community, and steps to take when a child is missing. Illustrations, lists of organizational resources, and suggested resource books are included.
