This training and technical assistance resource for grantees of the federal Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) - which features a model for a jurisdiction to use in reducing a backlog of untested sexual assault kits (SAKs) - provides a template for grantees to use when writing a press release that announces the arrest of a person in a sexual assault investigation.
Abstract
The template includes information on the role of the SAK as a source for evidence leading to the arrest, as well as information on the case's link to a broader effort in the jurisdiction to test previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits. Also, it suggests that a top-ranking law enforcement officer be quoted in making a commitment by the jurisdiction to test every unsubmitted SAK to bring more sexual assault offenders to justice, solve more "cold" cases, and bring justice to victims. It is also recommended that the press release include information on the year and dollar amount of the jurisdiction's SAKI grant, along with the intent of the grant.
