THIS RECORDS MANAGEMENT STUDY, DATED AUGUST 1977, WAS CARRIED OUT TO INTEGRATE THE CAREER CRIMINAL PROJECT INTO THE ENTIRE SAN DIEGO POLICE DEPARTMENT RECORDS SECTION AND TO IMPROVE RECORD FLOW.
Abstract
OVER THE YEARS, THE SAN DIEGO POLICE DEPARTMENT HAS CONDUCTED SEVERAL RATHER SOPHISTICATED INFORMATION PROCESSING PROJECTS. HOWEVER, ALL HAVE APPARENTLY EITHER ASSUMED ADEQUATE RECORDS PROCESSING OR HAVE SPECIFIED PARTICULAR PROCESSING NEEDS. MOST OF THIS REPORT FOCUSES ON (1) IMPROVEMENTS IN THE PRESENT MANUAL RECORDS SYSTEM AND (2) INTEGRATION INTO THE PROPOSED COMPUTERIZED RECORDS SYSTEM WITH A MINIMUM OF CONFLICT. SUGGESTIONS INCLUDE: MORE STRUCTURE IN INCIDENT REPORTING CODES, WHICH CAN THEN BE EASILY COMPUTERIZED; GREATER CASE NUMBER CONTROL; IMPROVEMENTS IN ARREST REPORTS; SIMPLIFIED TRAFFIC RECORDS PROCESSING WITH ELIMINATION OF DUPLICATE STEPS; AND VARIOUS TECHNICAL IMPROVEMENTS. SAMPLES OF FORMS USED ARE INCLUDED.
