THIS JUNE 1973 REPORT SUMMARIZES FINDINGS CONCERNING THE REVAMPING OF THE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM OF THE SAN JOSE POLICE DEPARTMENT BASED ON AN INTENSIVE ON-SITE SURVEY MADE APRIL 15-25, 1973.
Abstract
THE EXISTING SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED AND ALTERNATIVES AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A NEW SYSTEM ARE PRESENTED. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT TWO NEW MIRCARD BELTS BE INSTALLED TO REPLACE THE EXISTING SINGLE-BELT SYSTEM; THAT THE CHIEF DISPATCHER BE MADE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE HANDLING OF ALL 'HOT' CALLS; AND THAT THE CITY PLAN REPLACEMENT OF THE EXISTING COMMUNICATION CENTER WITH A NEW FACILITY BASED ON THE 'AUTOMATIC CALL DIRECTOR.' THE PROPOSED FACILITY WOULD BE CAPABLE OF HANDLING THE '911' EMERGENCY SYSTEM AND COULD BE EXPANDED INTO A MINICOMPUTER-ASSISTED DISPATCH CENTER, WHICH WOULD MAKE POSSIBLE THE ADDITION OF CATHODE RAY TUBE/KEYBOARD TERMINALS FOR THE COMPLAINT OPERATORS AND RADIO DISPATCHERS AND A MOBILE DIGITAL SYSTEM. IT IS ALSO RECOMMENDED THAT THE CITY UTILIZE ITS EXISTING MICROWAVE EQUIPMENT FOR THE SITES THAT WOULD INCUR MAXIMUM TELEPHONE LINE CHARGES AND THAT IT ADOPT THE 'JERK AND PULL' TYPE OF RADIO UNIT FOR ITS MOBILE POLICE OFFICERS. DETAILS ON CONSULTANT QUALIFICATIONS AND SELECTION FOR THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING OF THIS SYSTEM ARE INCLUDED.
