THIS REPORT, DATED DECEMBER 1973, PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF AN OPERATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS ASSESSMENT OF THE SANDERSVILLE (GA) POLICE DEPARTMENT, WHICH HAS A POLICE STRENGTH OF 13 SERVING A POPULATION OF 7,000.
Abstract
THE CITY OF SANDERSVILLE SERVES AS THE COUNTY SEAT. TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE WAS REQUESTED BY THE CHAIRMAN OF THE POLICE COMMITTEE OF THE SANDERSVILLE CITY COUNCIL IN ORDER TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND TO RECOMMEND ACTION FOR PRIORITY AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT. AN ON-SITE ANALYSIS OF OPERATIONS, INTERVIEWS WITH POLICE PERSONNEL, AND OBSERVATIONS OF POLICE PERSONNEL WERE METHODS UTILIZED IN THIS STUDY. AREAS INVESTIGATED INCLUDED COMMUNITY PROBLEMS, THE SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT, DEPARTMENTAL MANAGERIAL OPERATIONS, PROFESSIONAL POLICE TRAINING, PHYSICAL FACILITIES, JAIL FACILITIES, RADIO EQUIPMENT, VEHICLES, UNIFORMS AND GUNS, DISPATCHING, AND MOBILE EQUIPMENT. THE STUDY RECOMMENDED, AMONG OTHER THINGS, THAT ALL OFFICERS TAKE PART IN BASIC MINIMUM POLICE OFFICER TRAINING, THAT STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES BE DEVELOPED, THAT TWO OR MORE OFFICERS RECEIVE TRAINING IN JUVENILE PROBLEMS, THAT OFFICERS RECEIVE TRAINING AND AND ASSIGNMENT TO DRUG PREVENTION/ DETECTION, AND THAT DISPATCHERS RECEIVE ADEQUATE TRAINING TO HANDLE THE COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT.
