The Santa Clara County Public Defender (California) received 26,061 new cases in 1980-1981, an increase of 9 percent. The caseload averaged 471 cases per attorney.
Abstract
A total of 2,447 applicants were denied services because they were financially ineligible, and 1,037 cases were rejected due to conflicts of interest. The legal staff numbered 55.6 attorneys. Court appearances totaled 75,655, or 1,360 per attorney. Trials, hearings, and motions numbered 9,844. Tables present a detailed comparison of case categories and trials and hearings; delineate financial data, case costs, and the Public Defender staff organization; and present workload activity.
