This Saskatchewan Police Commission Annual Report for the period of April 1, 1996, to March 31, 1997, provides data and information on the Commission's role, police services, Commission activities, and the training program of the Saskatchewan Police College.
Abstract
The Commission's primary function, as outlined in the Police Act, 1990, section 19, is to promote adequate and effective policing throughout the Province and to preserve peace, prevent crime, promote the efficiency of police service, and improve police relationships with communities within Saskatchewan. The report's section on police services provides information on the police-population ratio for specific cities, towns and villages, and rural municipalities; for jurisdictions with Royal Canadian Mounted Police municipal contracts, the number of police personnel is indicated. Data are provided on the use of firearms by municipal police and by Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the course of their duty for calendar year 1996. This is followed by a table that shows crime trends by geographic area for each year from 1993 through 1996. Commission budgets are shown for the fiscal years 1988-89 through 1996-97. Following an overview of the mission of the Saskatchewan Police College, its recruit training activities for 1996-97 are summarized, along with in- service training courses and advanced police training. The information provided on each course includes the number of participants and their resident jurisdictions.
