STREET CRIME IN SOUTH BRONX, N.Y., IS DESCRIBED BY A WRITER WHO SPENT 5 WEEKS WITH POLICE OFFICERS AND JUVENILE GANG MEMBERS IN THE FORT APACHE PRECINCT.
Abstract
THE ARTICLE FOCUSES ON THE ACTIVITIES OF ONE PARTICULAR GANG, THE SAVAGE SKULLS, AND ON ONE YOUTH'S EXPERIENCE WITH GANG LIFE IN THE SOUTH BRONX. THE ARTICLE DESCRIBES MURDERS, RAPES, AND TORTURE ENGAGED IN BY THE GANG MEMBERS, CENTERING ON ONE INCIDENT IN WHICH A MENTALLY RETARDED YOUTH WAS TORTURED AND KILLED FOR TELLING POLICE THAT TWO SAVAGE SKULL MEMBERS HAD BEATEN AND ROBBED HIM. THE WRITER RELATED HIS TALKS WITH SOME OF THE GANG MEMBERS AND WITH OFFICERS ON THE ANTICRIME AND YOUTH GANG DIVISIONS OF THE SOUTH BRONX (FORT APACHE) POLICE PRECINCT. THE DESOLATION OF THE SOUTH BRONX AND THE MANNER IN WHICH THE GANGS TERRORIZE SHOPKEEPERS AND RESIDENTS ARE DESCRIBED. (LKM)
