This article describes the Saving Our Own (SOO) program; a training program for law enforcement officers in life saving techniques.
Abstract
The Save Our Own (SOO) program was designed to train police officers in simple, lifesaving techniques that have been proven effective. This program uses the early descriptions of a self-aid/buddy-aid (SABA) program that takes trauma center concepts out of the hospital and moves them to the point of injury. The skills that make up the core competencies taught in the SOO programs are management of life-threatening bleeding/hemorrhage, basic airway management skills, wounded officer evacuation techniques, and basic understanding of Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) concepts. Today, officers are faced with unprecedented threats to their personal safety; and with that said, the industry is left with preparing officers with the tools to stop those that would do harm and mitigate the consequences of these encounters. 1 table and 4 notes
