This volume is intended to provide parents with a comprehensive approach to teaching their children the life skills that will enable them to make life-protecting decisions about drugs.
Abstract
The discussion emphasizes that children need more than simplistic slogans. Parents should recognize that, like adults, children turn to drugs to relieve stress, to have fun, and to achieve social acceptance. Parents can prevent drug problems only by raising healthy, competent, informed children with well-developed life skills that enable them to meet their needs in more positive ways. The test includes basic information about drugs and about the importance of developing self-esteem, clear thinking, problemsolving skills, and positive relationship values. It includes activities and exercises that parents can use at home and explains a process, which is called the exchange of information, that parents can use to talk and listen to adolescents about drugs. Instructions are also given about how to intervene in drug use at the earliest stages. Index and chapter reference lists.
