This document is a resource guide for use in reducing school-based arrests.
Abstract
This toolkit was developed by the Connecticut School-Based Diversion Initiative (SBDI) as a resource guide for use in reducing school-based arrests. The SBDI is an interagency partnership working towards reducing rates of in-school arrests, expulsions, and out-of-school suspensions in Connecticut's public schools. The initiative works by promoting positive outcomes for youth at risk of arrest due to emotional or behavioral health challenges. This toolkit was developed as a way to disseminate the value and core elements of SBDI more broadly across the State. The information in the toolkit is presented in two sections that cover the following topics: a description of the core features of the SBDI model; a checklist of immediate action steps; outlines of SBDI professional development modules; a sample memoranda agreement (MOA) that a school can use to link with local service providers and police departments; and a list of additional resources designed to assist school personnel in developing staff skills, strengthening community partnerships, and reducing in-school arrests. The toolkit provides a step-by-step guide, including a checklist and self-assessment questions, for implementing some or all of the core principles and activities of the SBDI initiative based on each school's need.
